Are you thinking about doing fieldwork or an internship in a (post)
conflict setting? Do you want to know how people deal with trauma and what
consequences this might have? Then come to this workshop organized by Pax
et Bellum in cooperation with the TRAST-network where Ivana Maček
(assistant Professor in Genocide Studies) and Sverker Finnström (PhD) from
the Hugo Valentin Centre at Uppsala University will share their personal
experiences of doing fieldwork in Bosnia and Uganda. There will be plenty
of room for questions. The workshop will take place on Wednesday the 23rd
of November at 16.00 in Hall 1 of the Department of Peace and Conflict
Research, Gamla Torget 3 (2nd floor).
The Network for Work with Trauma and Secondary Traumatisation (TRAST) is
for researchers, students, and others working with issues concerning
genocide and other massive political violence. In their research they meet
traumatized people, witnesses, and work with narratives and various sorts
of documentation that in different ways reflect these extensive and
massive, collective traumas.

Pax et Bellum, in collaboration with the Uppsala Forum on Peace, Democracy and Justice, is excited to invite you to a special event on Monday the 31st of October at 16.00 in Hall 1 at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Gamla Torget 3 (2nd floor). Travelling Professor Erica Chenoweth (Wesleyan University) will discuss her book “Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict” written with Maria Stephan.
As part of her European book tour Professor Chenoweth will give a lecture discussing the findings on the effectiveness of campaigns of nonviolent resistance. In their book, Chenoweth and Stephan detail the factors enabling such campaigns to succeed—and, at times, causing them to fail. They find that nonviolent resistance presents fewer obstacles to moral and physical involvement, information and education, and participator commitment. Successful nonviolent resistance movements tend to usher in more durable and internally peaceful democracies, which are less likely to regress into civil war.
The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session chaired by Kristine Eck, PhD at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, and will conclude with a post-seminar reception. The Uppsala Forum on Peace, Democracy and Justice will provide snacks and drinks.
